Emma Caroline Long, 93, of Womelsdorf, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family in the evening hours of Thursday, November 30, 2023, at the Phoebe Berks Health Care Center. Born December 2, 1929, in West Reading, she was a daughter of the late Hans H. Gosch, Sr. and the late Elsa E. (neé Hohl) Gosch, first generation immigrants from Germany. Caroline is survived by her sister, Marianne E. Pletz, her children: Karen E. Wagner (Michael) and Cynthia M. Long (Betty); and, her precious granddaughter, Christiana Grace Wagner. She was predeceased by her husband, George R. Long (1982) and her brother, Hans H. Gosch, Jr. (2020). A 1948 graduate of Womelsdorf High School and a 1952 alumna of Reading Hospital School of Nursing, Caroline committed her life to lovingly serving her family, her church, her community, and her nursing profession. An active member of Zion Lutheran Church, Caroline served for more than 30 years as Director of the Handbell Choir and Treasurer of WELCA. A life member of the Reading Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, she cared for patients at Reading Hospital early in her career and, after taking a professional hiatus while raising her daughters, retired from Wernersville State Hospital. Caroline contributed to her community as a Camp Fire Girls Leader, Womelsdorf Library and Conrad Weiser West Elementary School volunteer, founding shareholder of the Womelsdorf Swimming Pool, and life member of the Lt. Col. Max Shaeffer VFW Post #6558 Auxiliary. Visitation with Caroline’s family will begin at 10 am and will be followed by the Funeral Service at 11 am on Tuesday December 5, 2023, at Zion Lutheran Church, 300 W. High St., Womelsdorf, with the Rev. June E. Wann officiating. Burial will follow in Womelsdorf Union Cemetery. Her family is grateful for the care the staff of Phoebe Berks and Heartland Hospice provided our dear Caroline. Contributions in Caroline’s memory may be made to her church at the above address.
