Larry G. Spangler, 87, of Womelsdorf, passed peacefully into heaven on Friday, September 9, 2022, in his residence. He was the husband of the late Ruth M. (Engle) Spangler, who passed away September 17, 2001.
Larry was born December 17, 1934, in Myerstown, to the late George & Kathryn (Kreitz) Spangler. He is survived by his children: Debra, wife of Rick Smith, Teresa, wife of Rob Greiner (deceased), & George Spangler, fiancé of Maureen Wenrich; his step son: Ronnie Strickler; six grandchildren & fourteen great-grandchildren; his siblings: Lorraine Gerhart, Georgia Spangler, & John Achenbach. He was predeceased by his step son, Walt Strickler.
He is also survived by his beloved dog, Elvis.
After the death of his wife, Larry had a companion, Violet Aulenbach, who traveled with him on many bus trips, cruising, and going out for dinner. She passed away in 2017.
Larry was proud to serve his country as a veteran of the US Navy, having served during the Korean War. He worked for the Sheridan Furnace in Newmanstown, until it closed in the 1960’s. He also worked at the Wilbur Chocolate factory, Lititz, where he retired in 1997.
A devoted sports enthusiast, the New York Yankees was an important part of his life, along with the Dallas Cowboys and Penn State Football. He loved bowling, playing in two leagues, Berks Lanes and the Womelsdorf Fire Co. He was an avid walker and was loved by his neighbors since the 1960’s.
He was a life member of several organizations: Max W. Schaeffer VFW #6558, Womelsdorf, Womelsdorf Rod & Gun, Marion Twp. Rod & Gun, and the Womelsdorf Vol. Fire Co. He was also a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Womelsdorf.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, September 24th at 10 AM at the Mull Funeral Home, 27 E High St., Womelsdorf, with the Rev. June E. Bair, officiating. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Saturday the 24th from 9:30 AM until time of service at the funeral home. Burial will be in Womelsdorf Union Cemetery. www.mullfh.com
