Marie E. (DeLong) Gettel
We are deeply saddened that on Thursday, January 19, 2023, Marie E (DeLong) Gettel, 86, of Tulpehocken Township, passed away in the morning hours quietly and peacefully surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Quentin A. Gettel for 62 years, who passed away October 9, 2018. Born on March 15, 1936, in Perry Township, she was a daughter of the late George J. and Annie A. (nee Hoffman) DeLong.
Marie is survived by a daughter, Sharon F. Gettel, Harrisburg and son, William P. Gettel (Stacy) Tulpehocken Township, two grandchildren Meredith L. Gettel Edgerly (Eli), Ohio and Dr. Cameron J. Gettel (Alicia) Connecticut, four precious Great Granddaughters, Amelia Quinn and Elliette Georgia Edgerly, Aviana Maria and Sophia Claire Gettel.
Marie was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, Rehrersburg for 66 years, where she sang in the choir, was a Sunday School teacher, youth advisor and most recently served on the 175th anniversary committee and attended the celebration service. She was a Den mother for Cub Scouts, member of Berks County Farm Women Group #2. Having served as President of the group, Secretary for the Berks County Farm Women, and completed the annual scrapbook for over 20 years, which she loved to do. She enjoyed participating in the Tulpehocken Red Hat Group, Blue Mountain 50+ Group and Conrad Weiser Chapter #449 of Eastern Star and leading the group as a Worthy Matron. When her children were in school, she was an active member of the Tulpehocken PTA.
Marie worked as a Cafeteria cashier for 20 years at Tulpehocken School District. She also assisted her husband with the family business, The Gettel Press and Student School Transportation for Tulpehocken School District. Her favorite job was being a fully devoted wife, mother, Nana to her grandchildren and great granddaughters, sister, aunt, and friend to those she loved dearly. Marie led a life of love, compassion, and fortitude. She was thoughtful, kind, generous and adored by everyone who interacted with her. She will forever be missed by those fortunate enough to have known her.
Surviving are three sisters, Fern Ruth (Paul), Alberta Steffy (John), Linda Holland (widow of Raymond), one brother, Larry DeLong (Geraldine), and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and their spouses. Marie was predeceased by her brothers Mark, Marvin, Adam, Kenneth, Norman, Russell, Bruce and sisters Anna Bohr, Jean Trostle, and Eleanor Keller.
A private graveside service was held at the convenience of the family. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life Service at 1:00PM on Sunday, February 26, 2023, at Trinity United Church of Christ, 27 Maria Street, Rehrersburg, PA. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her honor to Trinity United Church of Christ P.O. Box 111 Rehrersburg, PA 19550.
